The Casual Dork Weekly #15

It's a tech filled surprise

your weekly tech, internet and music update.

TECH

New Tech. Same Tech

it’s a mixed bag if i’m being honest…

This past week the annual IFA conference was held in Berlin, where all the major players in the tech space bring their ‘A Game’.

From hardware to software, it’s a paradise for tech enthusiasts! It’s 2024 so there were a lot of AI-focused products and services. If companies don’t put AI in their products nobody cares, but it gets to a point where I am like ‘That doesn’t need AI in it’.

Let’s do a quick rundown of the highlights from the conference:

Lenovo Auto Twist AI Concept

Have you ever wanted your laptop to open or close automatically or have your screen follow you on a video call?

Well, Lenovo is working on a concept laptop that does exactly that! It can track your movements, rotate its display to face you as you walk around it, and transform itself into different modes in response to voice commands.

Let’s see it action:

Gaming Monitors Can Now Do 600Hz!

The new Acer Nitro gaming monitors deliver high-definition resolution with blazing refresh rates of up to 600 Hz, placing these models among the fastest in today’s market.

These also feature rapid response times of up to 0.1 ms and AMD FreeSync™ Premium technology for smooth, tear-free gaming.

The new Nitro and Acer smart monitors include features that enhance user convenience and usability when working or streaming content directly from the devices, including the built-in WebOS platform, screen-mirroring technology, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support.

Aqara Launches A Smart Home System That Isn’t Always Listening

Smart home company Aqara has announced the Voice Mate H1 — a home automation voice control system activated by picking up a small puck rather than having its microphone constantly listen for a wake word.

The company is also launching its first outdoor camera, the Camera Hub G5 Pro, which, like its other cameras, will work with Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video.

These products, along with a new garage door controller, smart valve shut-off device, and new smart switches (for Europe only), were announced at the IFA tech show last week. Aqara hasn’t provided pricing or availability yet.

That was just a quick rundown of a select few announcements made at IFA 2024. You can read all the announcements made at The Verge.

MUSIC

Songs Turning 24 This Year

they would be entering the working world right about now…

The year 2000 was a turning point in music. We saw a shift where artists were more open to genre-blending and music listeners born in the 80’s and 90’s were entering the next phase of their lives.

I also look back fondly to the 2000s and the music that came out during that decade, but the year 2000 was a game changer (not for nothing 2001 was the best year for music in that decade IMO)

Here are some of the biggest songs from the year 2000. If you want to feel old, they are turning 24 this year.

*NSYNC - Bye Bye Bye

Janet Jackson - Doesn’t Really Matter

Nelly - Country Grammar

Craig David - 7 Days

Eminem - The Real Slim Shady
