The Casual Dork Weekly #8

your weekly tech, internet and music update.

The World Switched Off Last Week

did you feel it?

Millions and millions of Windows machines worldwide went down last week and everything descended into chaos. Banks, airlines, factories, traffic signals, and more ceased operations and IT admins everywhere scrambled to get their operations back online.

Not much was known as to why this was all happening but one thing’s for sure, people were pissed.

No one could access their online banking (shame it wasn’t just Capitec this time).

It turns out that a sensor configuration update to CrowdStrike’s Falcon platform caused a Windows logic error and it had everyone scrambling!

Social media was filling with news, videos and images of people having to get boarding passes written on paper and IT admins having to manually go on site to push fixes to the affected machines, check this one out:

People were also sharing stories from their companies on the r/sysadmin subreddit.

Wild times…

MKBHD’s Studio Is A Beast

nothing less is to be expected from the G.O.A.T

I recently watched a video on The Studio channel, one of the four channels run by MKBHD and his team. All I can say is wow!

The quality and quantity that comes from a team of 10 people is just so mindblowing and awe-inspiring, to say the least.

Here is a look into a week at MKBHD’s Studio:

I Indeed Had A Blxst!

he understood the assignment and didn’t miss…

LA-based musician released his debut studio album ‘I’ll Always Come Find You’ last Friday 19 July and I promised I would share my thoughts so here we go…

The album opens up strong with the rap-inspired ‘Paper Route’ featuring 2Chainz. It sets the mood for the songs to follow and pulls you in from 0:01 with a voice-over saying ‘Roll camera and ACTION!’ over the sound of a film reel spinning.

We are then taken on a melodic and lyric journey that’s divided into ‘4 discs’ with each containing 5 songs for a total of 20 tracks which is on par with some albums these days.

My favourite song on the album after one full listen, has to be Dance With The Devil featuring Anderson .Paak 🤌 A track which plays off of both artist’s strengths. It’s laced with smooth RnB vocals and elements of hypnotizing percussion.

As the album draws to a close, we are treated to a slower, smoother listen that winds it all down culminating in a final song featuring Kamasi Washington, a jazz saxophonist who is the founding member of the jazz collective West Coast Get Down.

Overall, this album can go back to back and will be in my rotation for a long time.

It’s an

8.5/10

Rolling Stone Reveals Their Best & Worst Album Covers of All Time

what does rolling stone know anyway?

Let’s look at what Rolling Stone deems to be the best and worst album covers of all time. eye roll. fart noise.

best

worst

I get it the worst is pretty bad, but it’s not bad for everyone. Limp Bizkit lives among the pantheons of supergroups and will always live in the hearts of many.

Now let’s look at what Rolling Stone deems to be the best album cover of all time. There is no denying that this is an iconic image that can be seen on many a t-shirt around the world and it has been stolen, copied, and remixed millions of times, but this album cover of Joy Division’s debut album ‘Unknown Pleasures’ to me is not the best album cover of all time.

There are so many better ones like number 13 on the best album cover list. Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly.

But alas, you can read the full lists by Rolling Stone below:
