The Casual Dork Weekly #2

Ten toes down. Let's jump in.

your weekly tech, internet and music update.

Surely it should be bulletproof by now…

like how much stronger can it get?

Okay, hear me out. How many times have you dropped your phone and there is that second of sheer panic and horror before you pick it up? So many questions run through your mind...

Is my screen cracked? Shit! How much is this going to cost me?

We’re told that our phones have the latest, greatest and strongest glass known to man. Gorilla Glass! Every year the claims come out.

20% stronger! 35% more scratch resistant! Drop tested from 10 meters!

But what does that mean? I have been thinking about it and if the glass gets so much stronger each year, surely it should be bulletproof by now. Gorilla Glass is currently in its 9th iteration, Gorilla Glass Armor.

Yet, everyday people are cracking their screens. What’s being done to fix this? Let’s look behind the curtain and see how Apple tests its device’s durability with the G.O.A.T MKBHD.

Let’s take a song break

KAYTRANADA dropped his 4th studio album on the 7th of June and early reactions already elude to the fact that one of the lead singles might already be poised to have the summer (in the north) in a chokehold.

Give the KAYTRANADA and Childish Gambino collab ‘Witchy’ a listen here.

It’s a Gamer’s Paradise

summer game fest both over and under-delivered…

It was a fully stacked weekend in terms of gaming this past weekend. Summer Game Fest gave up so many highs and lows. More highs in my opinion but most developers put their best foot forward with either game trailers, announcements or just simple updates on upcoming games.

The standout sessions were the Summer Game Fest keynote from video game vet Geoff Keighley which kicked off all the festivities with a lot of gaming goodness. You can watch the showcase below:

XBOX came out of the gate with a full-blast Kamehameha of announcements. There were new additions to familiar franchises and new console updates, even though we didn’t get the XBOX handheld we hoped for. Here are some of the biggest announcements to come from the showcase:

Gears of War: E-Day

This one is a prequel to the popular series

Built on Unreal Engine 5, Gears of War: E-Day comes to tell the origin story of Marcus Fenix. We got some in-game footage showcasing just how far the series has come. Watch the trailer here.

DOOM: The Dark Ages

More blood and guts galore

The next DOOM is heading into the dark fantasy realm and I am here for it! Slated for a 2025 release, we see a return to the medieval era with this one with the slayer chopping up baddies in the dark ages as the title eludes to. Watch the trailer here.

Updated XBOX Consoles Are On The Way!

It’s basically just more storage and new-ish colourways!

Nostalgia 2.0

having one of these in the 90’s was next level

The MNET decoder was so goated! Being able to watch a Sunday night movie (if your parents let you stay up) without ads was like having a cinema in your house and who could forget Derek Watts (RIP 🙏) and Ruda Landman giving us some of the best investigative journalism period!
