CES 2025: The Best & Worst Tech We Saw

it was a busy event for sure…

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is held every year in Las Vegas and it is filled to the brim with all the tech goodness you can dream of. This year was no different. It featured product offerings from all the big name tech manufacturers, but there was also space for the smaller guys.

This is a recap of some of my favourite and not so favourite announcements from CES:

Nvidia Announces The RTX 50 Series Graphics Cards

CES kicked off with a bang as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang took to the stage to unveil the new RTX 50 Series GPU line.

This includes the RTX 5070, 5070 Ti, 5080 and the flagship 5090 GPU. These cards all come with a hefty price tag:

As you can see, if you want to take advantage of these next-gen cards, you’re going to have to fork quite a bit of cash.

I can’t wait for the benchmark numbers to start showing once these cards are released in late January or early February.

The AutoKeybo

Now this keyboard looks like something straight out of Ghost In The Shell. Using the power of multiple cameras and AI, the keyboard will detect how your hands are orientated and slide out a trackpad and NUM Pad for quick switching.

This concept looks cool but I am guessing this will be quite the learning curve. It will be available later this year for $699 (just over R13000) which isn’t a bad price considering there is a full PC stored in the device's chassis. All you need to do is add a keyboard.

Check it out in action at CES via The Verge:

Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 6

Yes, I needed to keep this image as tall as possible because this is Lenovo’s new ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 with a rollable display that extends and contracts depending on what content is shown.

This is a concept that was shown at CES a few years ago so it’s pretty insane to see it make it’s way into a consumer product now. This isn’t too surprising though as it was always going to be a natural progression after we got foldable screens.

Check out how insane this is:

Now, onto what I think is the worst thing I saw at CES…

Mirumi: The Sloth Robot

This little companion could clip onto your handbag and observe the world around it. It’s programmed to act like a child, so it can pretend to be shy and mimic the curiosity of an infant. WHUT? 🫠

I don’t get it. Is it meant to give off feelings of ‘kawaii’? Is it meant to just sit there and look deep into your soul with its soul-less eyes? You be the judge…

MUSIC

What Does 2025 Have In Store For Us?

It’s a new year, meaning a new slate for some new music. It’s exciting because the news coming out right now is making it look like a juicy year for music.

We are looking at a bumper year of new releases, reissues of older albums and some interesting documentaries.

These are some of the highlights I am seeing so far:

The Weeknd

The Weeknd's latest release (coming 24 Jan) defies conventional expectations, marking the conclusion of the "After Hours" trilogy with an eclectic mix of musical styles.

He seamlessly transitions from his signature sound to explore classic R&B vibes, mainstream pop anthems, and even acoustic guitar-driven melodies. This creative twist arrives in the form of an album, strategically released before the highly anticipated film, where fans will witness the Weeknd's acting alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. Get ready for a captivating musical journey and a cinematic experience like no other.

Mac Miller

The estate of Mac Miller will be releasing his second posthumous album since his passing in 2018.

According to reports ‘Balloonerism’ will include recordings from 2013 - 2014. This album has been the stuff of internet lore for years and it appears we are finally getting it on 17 Jan.

There is no clear indication of a robust tracklist just yet, but we could see features from SZA and the late rapper’s alter ego, Delusional Thomas.

Alessia Cara

After winning the Grammy for Best New Artist in 2018, Alessia Cara was on a high with pretty successful releases but in more recent years, she has seemed to fade into the background.

She hopes to turn that image around with the announcement of her new project, Love & Hyperbole.

“Dead Man,” the first single from her forthcoming fourth full-length, suggests an Amy Winehouse-esque direction.

This is an album I will be looking out for.
